Peterborough Young Singers Musical Directors - Present

About Us—Current

What We Do

The choirs meet on Saturday mornings at East Community Centre, Padholme Road, and each group undertakes around eight engagements a year, including:

  • formal concerts by ourselves or with other musical groups
  • joint events with schools
  • carol singing
  • music competition festivals
  • grand openings
  • fetes & other community events
  • weddings

The choir is managed and governed by a voluntary committee of parents. In compliance with Child Protection policy, each committee member has completed a Criminal Records Bureau check and undertaken Child Protection training.

What Choir Members Learn

The rehearsals provide a fun musical environment in which children and teenagers learn how to sing—including breathing techniques, voice blending, enunciation, timing and rhythm—
how to be part of a team; and how to have the confidence to sing in public.

In addition, the choir equips its members well for school music work: for example, the Junior Choir covers many elements of the National Curriculum in music at Key Stages 2 and 3:

  • Reading and understanding music notation
  • Singing in parts
  • Singing different types and styles of music such as:
    • plainsong
    • folk songs in English and other languages
    • spirituals / gospels
    • motets
    • art songs by the great composers

The choir uses a series of self-published assessments, testing skill and knowledge in aurals, vocal technique, theory.
